Home Builders Are Becoming Familiar With BIM

December 14, 2016

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is still a great unknown for many members of the home building industry, but they’ve at least heard of it now.

A recent survey of NAHB members (architects, single-family, and multifamily builders) found that 27 percent of respondents said they are familiar with BIM, up from 17 percent in 2014. Today, only 32 percent have not heard of BIM, down from 43 percent two years ago, and 41 percent said that they have heard of BIM but don’t know much about it.

BIM is a process for managing the information produced during a construction project, in a common format, from the earliest feasibility stage through design, construction, operation and finally demolition, in order to make the most efficient use of that information. A representation of a building project in BIM format typically consists of a three-dimensional model integrated with an informational database about materials, products, components, systems and their properties and performance.

NAHB Eye on Housing reports the technology is being put into practice. Nearly half of respondents who said they are familiar with BIM are currently using it in one of their projects.
