Cities Across The U.S. Carve Out Their Own Linear Parks

Chicagoans adore the 606, a new 2.7-mile multi-use trail and park built on an abandoned elevated rail line. It connects four northwest-side neighborhoods and provides a relaxing green space for those who want to take a stroll — or commute to work.

Curbed found eight impressive linear parks located across the country. Linear parks are a cross between a trail and park and can accommodate bicyclists, pedestrians, and skaters. They can range in length from a few blocks to several miles.

The High Line in New York City has gardens with perennials, grasses, shrubs, and trees. Olmsted Linear Park in Atlanta has 45 acres of green space with 2,600 new trees and shrubs. The Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston has ziplines and free public Wi-Fi.

The just-opened Eager Park in East Baltimore is a $12.2 million addition created to be a gathering spot for residents and workers to relax. The 5.5-acre, 3-block linear park was designed by Mahan Rykiel Associates and Gensler Architects to include a fitness exercise circuit, a large lawn, a performance amphitheater and pavilion, a playground, and a community garden.
