Home batteries are helping to negate the rising cost of electricity, especially during peak periods.
Curbed reports that energy storage is the power sector’s next “disruptive” technology. Batteries can change the way people pay for electricity: By taking power from the grid when power is cheap (say, overnight), and then using a battery during the times of the day when energy is high-demand (early evening), homeowners and businesses can avoid paying top dollar prices.
Battery storage is becoming cheaper as well, going from $1,000 per kilowatt-hour to $230 between 2010 and 2016. And by 2025, the cost of battery storage is expected to be half of what it is today.
Peña Station Next, a small sustainable community in Denver, is one of the pioneers of residential battery storage, along with new communities in California and the U.K.
