Here are the regional markets that generated the most online traffic in 2021

Taking the cake for Zillow’s most popular city of 2021 is South Lake Tahoe, joining its West Coast counterparts to sweep the top awards of the year for most popular vacation town, beach town and small town. Newport, Oregon ranked as the year’s most popular beach town with a high number of page views per listing on Zillow, beating out Naples, Florida, and Lincoln City, Oregon for the top spot.

Zillow surfers exploring their dream homes drove up page-view traffic for Calabasas, California, which was the most popular small town in 2021 with an average home valuation exceeding $1.5 million.

Based on Zillow page-view traffic, available housing inventory, price appreciation and other housing barometers that indicate consumer demand, Zillow analyzed thousands of ZIP codes within the nation’s 100 largest metropolitan areas to create a ranking of the site’s most popular U.S. cities. 

The most popular places on Zillow reflect a couple of trends we’ve been seeing throughout the pandemic. Notably, those who can now work remotely, at least occasionally, are exploring new opportunities in areas that offer relative affordability and year-round outdoor living.
