In a recent survey conducted by Morning Consult on behalf of NAHB, 82% of Americans agreed that policymakers should consider housing affordability when creating new legislation and regulations. Roughly 79% of survey respondents cited housing affordability as a problem in their state, and 66% suggested that the government should create an incentive program for builders and developers to create more housing, NAHBNow reports.

Respondents also expressed a strong interest in for-rent properties and higher-density homes to create an affordable housing alternative for more populated communities. As higher mortgage rates continue to price out homebuyers across the country, Americans are urging policymakers to find a fast and effective solution.

Respondents from across the country said housing inventory and housing affordability are a problem in their city, county, state and across the country, with 79% citing housing affordability as a problem in their state.

The nation needs more housing and Americans want the federal government to support more new home production. With housing affordability on the decline and families looking ahead to another year of spending more time at home due to the ongoing pandemic, the need for more homes is apparent.
